It is important that those struggling with debt receive information on the options open to them so they can make an informed decision, an expert has said.

Iain Wrenshall, director of Debt Help UK, suggested that being made aware of all the options allows debtors to choose a solution rather than having one chosen for them.

"It is important that people don’t bury their heads in the sand but look for free advice which is going to help them understand the solutions and the options open to them," he urged.

Furthermore, those experiencing problem debt must act quickly as when their situation becomes worse, their options decrease and creditors can begin to choose solutions, Mr Wrenshall added.

Recent research conducted by financial advice and services website uSwitch.com suggested nearly one in four Britons is finding their current debt levels unmanageable.

It revealed 9.5 million have maxed out at least one form of credit over the last six months.
